Kalyan Banerjee is the director of United Phosphorus Limited, one of the
largest manufacturers of agrochemicals in India and is chair of United
Phosphorus Bangladesh Limited.
He graduated in chemical
engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur in 1964,
having studied in Vishwa Bharati, the school set up by Nobel Laureate
poet, Rabindranath Tagore.
Kalyan has been involved in many activities in the community and
elsewhere. These include membership of the American Chemical
Society, the Indian Institute of Chemical Engineers and the Senate of the
Vishva-Bharati University. He has twice been president of the Vapi
Industries Association and is a past chair of the Gujarat Council of
Confederation of Indian Industry. Kalyan serves as trustee of several
organisations including the Jai Research Foundation and the Rotary
Awards for Humanity Trust.
He has been a member of the Rotary Club of Vapi since 1972 where he
served as club president during 1975/76 and district governor during
1980_81. Kalyan served Rotary International as director during 1995/97
and served as Trustee of The Rotary Foundation from 2001/05. In 1997/
he was the general coordinator of the Poverty and Hunger Alleviation
Task Force which initiated the programme of low cost housing for Rotary.
In addition, he has served as a member of the International PolioPlus
committee as well as on Rotary’s Reach Out to Africa initiative.
He is a major donor, benefactor, and bequest society member and has
been awarded the Foundation’s Citation for Meritorious Service, and its
Distinguished Service Award.
Kalyan is married to Binota, an active social worker and a member of
Inner Wheel Vapi. They have a son, Kanishka, a daughter, Ruma, and
four grandchildren.
